Earl Van Scoyk of Terre Haute served in the 28th Infantry Division. He was captured by the Germans in December of 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was a prisoner in the German prison camp Stalag 9B until he was liberated on April 10, 1945. As he was leaving the prison camp, he went into one of the German buildings and grabbed this large site map of the entire prison camp. He returned home with it and kept it folded in a box for years.
Another of Van Scyok’s bring-back items was the photograph of a German prison guard, who befriended Earl and gave him the photo with the date – “March 31, 1945” – and the inscription “65 years old” on the backside of this photo. Earl retired from Conrail Railroad after 40 years of service.
